READING
Agricultural Emphasis
to Reading Instruction
1600 – 1900
Formal education began in the 1600s. During this period, the church, religion, and morality had a great influence in reading instruction. The children were taught in a one room school. While formal education was beginning to develop, agriculture was still priority. Older children would be taken out of school to work in the fields.
