Interest Inventory
What:
Interest inventories are used to determine a student's general and literacy likes/dislikes, and to help the teacher know how to best stimulate an interest in reading.
Who:
These inventories can be used for all ages; can be purchased, but also developed by the teacher.
Why:
Interest inventories are used to determine reading/work/play interests and habits.
When:
These are used as needed, but preferably at the beginning of school or working with the student.
How:
-
Develop questions to determine interests or use a pre-developed inventory.
-
Questions can be read and recorded by the assessor or written by the student - usually more effective when the answers are recorded by the teacher.
-
Can also use pictures - especially for younger students.
-
Use information to develop rapport with student and to aid you in selection of materials for teaching purposes.
