Peabody Picture Vocabulary

 

What:

The PPVT measures understanding of he spoken word in standard American English and thus assesses vocabulary acquisition.

 

Who:

This assessment is designed for ages 2 years and 6 months through 90 years or older.

 

Why:

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary assessment quickly evaluates a student's receptive vocabuary with no reading or writing.

 

When:

Can be used when workin with a struggling reader at any time, or with nonreaders and people with written-language difficulties.

 

How:

  1. Determine chronological age of the student to find the basal age - the level where the student misses 0 or 1 words.

  2. The administrator reads a word aloud and the student points to the picture that corresponds with the word said.

  3. When the student misses 8 or more words, terminate testing.
