When:

Sight word assessments can be used anytime needed to help identify a reason behind lack of fluency in reading.

Why:

Used to increase fluency achievement in reading, writing, and spelling.

How:

  1. Select the word list to be used.

  2. Develop a list for student use (be sure words are easily read by students) and one for the teacher to use for recording.

  3. Have the student read the words, skipping those not recognized (teacher may tell them the word if requested.

  4. Make a list of all unknown words at the appropriate level to be used in remediation.
